OBAMA MANDATES BLACK BOX IN ALL CARS
Bypassing Congress, Obama  has issued a ruling to impose black box data recorders installed in every car. The Obama White House Office of Management Budget said it has completed a review of the proposal to make so-called vehicle "black boxes" mandatory in all cars and trucks. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers , the group representing Detroit's Big Three automakers, Toyota Motor Corp, and Volkswagen AG. "Event data recorders help our engineers understand how cars perform in the real world but looking forward, we need to make sure we preserve privacy. Automakers do not access EDR data without consumer permission, and any government requirements to install EDRs on all vehicles must include steps to protect consumer privacy," said spokeswoman Gloria Bergquist. The event data recorder information has already been used in courts to convict people. Also NHTSA has stated 4th amendment protections are not violated when police take the recorders or download them at accidnet scenes. Insurance companies will ultimately demand access to these devices before issuing policies. Horace Cooper of the National Center for Public Policy Analysis observes “Not only will this new requirement give new resources and data to the DOT to support more economically damaging regulations in the future, this mandate itself represents an unprecedented breach of privacy for Americans.” A measure that would allow car owners to disconnect or disable black boxes failed in the House.
