China produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s rare earths – 17 essential elements used to manufacture a wide range of items, from weapons to BlackBerrys. Without these specialized metals most hi-tech weapons, computer, satellite production would come to a halt. China's dominance of global supplies caused alarm in 2010 when it temporarily halted exports to Japan. The US, European Union and Japan (NATO) have joined forces to launch a World Trade Organisation case (and further escalation of the Afghan war) aiming to break China’s control over the global supply of “rare earth” minerals essential to almost all high-technology manufacturing. On September 14, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announced that nearly 1 million metric tons of rare earth elements exist below ground in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. Director of the Department of Defense's Task Force for Business and Stability Operations Regina Rubey stated that the discovery could have a major impact on the war-torn nation.
