A shocking new report by The Guardian and BBC details how the United States armed and trained Iraqi death squads and ran torture centers. Tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi's were tortured to death and maimed in the name of the US taxpayer.   It is a story that stretches from the U.S. backed death squads in Central America during the 1980s to the imprisoned Army whistleblower Bradley Manning. A 15-month investigation by the Guardian and BBC Arabic reveals how retired US Colonel James Steele, a veteran of American proxy wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua, played a key role in training and overseeing US-funded special police commandos who ran a network of torture centres in Iraq. Another special forces veteran, Colonel James Coffman, worked with Steele and reported directly to General David Petraeus, who had been sent into Iraq to organise the Iraqi death squads. The allegations, made by US and Iraqi witnesses in the Guardian/BBC documentary, implicate US advisers for the first time in the human rights abuses committed by the commandos. It is also the first time that Petraeus  who last November was forced to resign as director of the CIA after a sex scandal has been linked through an adviser to this abuse.The Guardian/BBC Arabic investigation was sparked by the release of classified US military logs on WikiLeaks that detailed hundreds of war crime incidents where US soldiers came across tortured and killed detainees in a network of detention centers run by Salvadorian mercenaries and Iraqi commandos hired by and paid for by Genera Petraeus.

In a barely noticed development, a US Army unit is now training for domestic operations under the control of US Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command. An initial news report in the Army Times newspaper noted that in addition to emergency response the force “may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control.”
