The Homeland Security Department ordered so many drones it can’t keep them all flying and doesn’t have a good plan for how to use them, according to a new audit by the department’s inspector general released Monday. The Defense Department uses armed drones overseas in its so-called war on terror. American law enforcement agencies at all levels are also increasingly turning to drones for use in spying on the American public inside the U.S. But they are increasingly finding themselves butting heads with civil libertarians who worry about intrusion into innocent citizens’ private lives. Drones are capable of highly advanced and almost constant surveillance, and they can amass huge amounts of data. They carry various types of equipment including live-feed video cameras, infrared cameras, heat sensors, and radar. They carry super high resolution “gigapixel” cameras that can “track people and vehicles from altitudes above 20,000 feet and can monitor up to 65 (Enemies of the State) simultaneously,  and see targets from 25 miles down range.” Predator drones can eavesdrop on electronics transmissions, and one drone unveiled at DEFCON last year can crack Wi-Fi networks and intercept text messages and cell phone conversations without the knowledge or help of either the communications provider or the customer. Drones are also designed to carry weapons, and some have suggested that drones carrying weapons such as tasers and gernade launchers could be used domestically over your house.
